Celebrate Life – 125 Years of Roche

Four nights, 45 powerful projectors, 1,690,000 ansi lumens of light and a show that celebrates life! auviso was commissioned to technically implement the magnificent light and sound spectacle at the Roche Tower.

With a three-dimensional light and sound spectacle under the motto "Celebrate Life", the Basel-based pharmaceutical company Roche celebrated its 125th anniversary on the evenings of 28 September to 1 October 2021. Numerous artists* participated in the event: In the first act of the light show, photos and drawings from the Basel population were projected onto the facade of the 178-metre-high Roche Tower 1. In the second and third acts of the light show, numerous visual effects by students from the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland and Roche itself enchanted the staircase-shaped high-rise. The video animation was accompanied musically by the Roche anthem composed especially for the occasion, interpreted by star DJ Worakls and the Basel Symphony Orchestra.

From project planning to implementation

auviso played a decisive role in the success of this prestigious project - from the planning to the projection on the facades of the tower, the sound system, the event buildings to the 5 km long fibre optic cable and the necessary power supply for the three projector locations. Everything from a single source.

In order to successfully plan and implement a project of this size, specialists with a lot of experience and know-how as well as the right technology are essential. With similar projects such as the façade projection "Rendez-vous Bundesplatz" in Bern and the Ski World Championships St. Moritz 2017, auviso has already proven several times that we are the ideal partner for such unique challenges. The project in Basel required 10 months of preparation. The construction work and on-site testing took twelve days, and the dismantling was completed after three days. No less than 50 specialists were involved in the project and worked around 3000 hours - during the day, but also at night.

Latest Panasonic projector generation in use

The art installation at Roche Tower 1 stood out with its enormous projection surface of 10,000 m2. In order to realise the three-dimensional experience - consisting of nine composite video images in 4K resolution - a total of 45 powerful Panasonic projectors were used. The total light output of 1,690,000 ansi-lumens literally turned night into day. These projectors have already illuminated the opening and closing ceremonies at the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games and will be used next in Dubai.

The projections were projected onto two sides of Roche Tower 1. Three projection locations were necessary for this: the roof and individual windows of Roche building B52, a location for the projection of the West Tower and an outdoor location on the other bank of the Rhine. To protect the projectors from wind and weather, special constructions and container installations were necessary. In addition to the planning and demanding implementation, auviso was also responsible for the power supply of these three locations. For optimal sound during the spectacle, 87 loudspeakers were installed along a stretch of 1.4 km along the banks of the Rhine.
