The world of media technology is evolving rapidly, and one technology that is proving to be an absolute game changer in digital signage and beyond is e-paper. But what exactly is e-paper and why is it so revolutionary?
E-paper – also known as electronic paper – is a display that mimics the look and readability of conventional paper. In contrast to conventional screens, which shine through backlit pixels, e-paper is based on an electrophoretic technology that displays text and images in an almost paper-like appearance. This means: no glaring light, but a natural display that remains easy to read even in bright sunlight.
In the context of digital signage – the digital signage known from advertising boards, timetables or information terminals – e-paper offers a number of advantages.
Which properties of paper are imitated?
The magic of e-paper lies in its ability to mimic key properties of paper almost perfectly. The most impressive aspects include:
1. Reading without reflection: Similar to real paper, e-paper reflects ambient light instead of actively emitting it. This makes the screen easy to read even in direct sunlight and is easy on the eyes.
3. Thin and flexible: E-paper displays can be made extremely thin and even bendable. This makes them ideal for applications that require portability and elegance.
4. Contrast and feel: Although e-paper is not physically tactile, the high contrast of black and white (or color, depending on the model) resembles the fine details of ink on paper.
How does the electronic ink work?
At the heart of e-paper technology is the so-called electronic ink (e-ink). This is based on an electrophoretic technology that makes use of microscopically small capsules embedded in a thin layer between two electrodes.
Each of these capsules contains tiny particles that are differently charged and colored – typically black, negatively charged particles and white, positively charged particles. Depending on whether a positive or negative electrical voltage is applied, the particles either migrate to the surface or into the background. This creates high-resolution black and white images that remain stable until a new electrical signal changes them. In color e-paper displays, additional color layers or filters are used to create a broad spectrum of colors – a function that has made impressive progress in recent years.
The areas of application for e-paper are just as diverse as the product itself. In principle, an e-paper can be used in all areas in which print material is currently used and is therefore suitable as a sustainable and environmentally friendly solution. However, as with any type of technology, it is important to first evaluate which framework conditions exist.
E-paper or a conventional display – how to make the right choice
Where do we recommend the well-known digital screens instead of an e-paper?
• Fast-changing content: E-paper tends to be unsuitable for animations or videos, as the refresh rate is low, so if the content shown is to be changed frequently, we recommend a display.

• When colors in the content are striking: With e-paper, colors appear paler, and many models currently only support black and white. Although color e-paper technologies are slowly coming onto the market, they do not yet offer the color intensity of LCDs.
• In a dark environment: In rooms that tend to be dark, we recommend a conventional display as the e-paper works without blacklight and is therefore difficult to read in dim light or in dark rooms.
• In very cold temperatures: We recommend working with a display, especially when placed outside and with strong temperature fluctuations, which can sometimes fall below 0°, as the function of e-paper can be impaired.
